Thanks for all the links...I downloaded the b&w conversion filter and I like the effects.

my method with b/w filter
[check out the presets adobe default but ie linear tweaks darker for over light pics]

after i use filter on layer
i make either an adjustment layer or layer dupe and tweak with selective color
ive started to reblend in colors makes weird lightings

also alternatively to using levels or curves on color
i use the b/w filter on a dupe layer then tweak with selective color
then put it in luminosity mode
i generally lower the opacity it gives a nice brightness to the darker arears specifically
